About Olympus

Olympus, the Japanese manufacturer of optics and imaging products, was founded in 1919 as Takachiho Seisakusho. In Japanese mythology, Takachiho is the name of a mountain where eight million gods and goddesses live. The name was chosen to represent strong aspiration. The company name changed in 1949 and adopted its new name from the mountain home of the gods in Greek mythology – Olympus. In its infancy, the company originally specialized in thermometers and microscopes. Today Olympus manufactures precision machinery and instruments, cameras, voice recorders, and a variety of medical devices. In 1936, Olympus introduced its first camera to the market, and the company has had a long history of designing and producing cameras and lenses ever since. One of their first innovations was the Olympus PEN series of cameras with a half-frame format, allowing 72 pictures to be taken on standard 36 exposure roll of film. Today, Olympus is a leading manufacturer of digital cameras. The company has a large range of compact digital cameras, and continues to make innovative strides in the digital SLR market. Olympus introduced the Four-Thirds system, which uses the same frame size as their PEN series cameras. This Four-Thirds system was also the consumer-grade of DSLRs to feature a live preview. The feature has since been widely adopted by its competitors, and is now a standard among DSLR cameras. Olympus is currently a sponsor for the US Open and the National Park Foundation.
