Parents go through more diapers than just about any other product for babies, so it's critical to find the right balance between comfort, absorbency, and price. Infants often go through 8 to 10 diapers a day, while older kids may only need 4 or 5 per day. Parents will breathe a sigh of relief when their kids finally graduate to being potty trained and they can just wear pull-ups at night, until they don't even need those anymore. When buying diapers, you need to choose between several types and sizes.
Types of Diapers
Diapers fall into two major categories: disposable and cloth. While cloth diapers used to be the norm, many parents appreciate the convenience of disposables. However, cloth is making a resurgence, with lots of easy options to choose from. Parents especially appreciate that cloth diapers are a one-time investment, rather than something they have to go out and buy on a regular basis. Plus, they are better for the environment because they don't create as much landfill waste. Within the category of cloth diapers, you have old-fashioned prefold diapers, which you hold on with pins and cover with a plastic shell, and the newer generation of fitted cloth diapers that are all one piece and have velcro or snap tabs.
Sizes of Diapers
Disposable diapers range in size from newborn all the way up through size 6. Most babies move all the way up through the first four sizes in their first year, after which point they stay in sizes 4, 5, and 6 until potty trained. Some petite children may never reach size 6 before being potty trained. Cloth diapers often come in a one-size model. The modern ones have a series of snaps to adjust the diaper to fit the baby's size, while the old-fashioned ones allow you to fold and pin them to the baby's size.
