Video Home System (VHS) tapes were launched by a Japanese company called JVC in 1976. First used professionally in television for delayed broadcasts, VHS tapes became the dominant method of watching movies and recording television in the home from the 1980’s through the 1990’s. Introduced at the same time Sony launched their Beta system, the VHS system won the so called “format wars” because of its longer playing time. VHS tapes would change the world of entertainment. Consumers could now purchase movies pre-recorded by movie makers, or record their own directly from the television.
VHS tapes are analog based cassette tapes played on a video cassette player (VCR). The picture and sound are recorded onto the physical tape using heads within the VCR machine. Each time the tape is watched it unrolls through the machine along heads similar to those in a standard audio cassette machine. These heads needed occasional cleaning and maintenance for higher quality pictures. They would eventually wear out and a new VCR would be needed. A variety of gadgets were invented to help maintain VCRs and extend the life of VHS tapes for consumers.
The widespread use of VCR’s in homes allowed the movie and television industry to bring their entertainment to a wider audience. People could go see a movie in the theatre, and could then buy it later on tape to watch repeatedly if they liked it. This also created the opportunity for businesses to rent tapes for a fee and a whole new industry was born. VHS tapes did impact the number of people who attended movie theatres, as it was often much cheaper to rent the movie than to go out for an evening. VHS tapes stopped being produced in 2006 by movie makers, with all movies now being released in DVD or Blu-Ray format.
